What to Expect When You Begin Therapy

Starting therapy can feel unfamiliar, especially if you have never spoken openly about your experiences before. It is completely normal to feel uncertain, nervous, or unsure of where to begin.

The first conversation

The first session usually focuses on understanding what has brought you to therapy, how your current challenges are affecting you, and what you hope to receive from the process. Confidentiality, practical arrangements, and any questions you may have can also be discussed.

Moving at a manageable pace

You do not need to share everything immediately or arrive with the right words. Therapy develops gradually and should move at a pace that feels manageable. The process is collaborative, allowing you and your psychologist to identify meaningful goals and determine the most appropriate way forward.
